This month 24 seven chatted with James Veck-Gilodi the lead singer from Deaf Havana on their tour which will include a visit to Hull’s own Welly club this March and their new album “Rituals” which includes the brand new tune “Holy”. Deaf Havana are an alternative rock band consisting of James Veck-Gilodi Lee Wilson, Tom Ogden and Matthew Veck-Gilodi who form the band. Lead singer James took some time out to chat with us about the tour and album.

How is your new album, “Rituals” different to other albums you have released?
The album was actually written nearby in Sheffield. The writing process was very different than how we normally write our music. Lead singer James said, I would normally write a song at home on an acoustic guitar and bring it to the rest of the band and they would help turn it into a rock song. The process this time round was a lot more computer based, with the use of music programs, which unintentionally made the songs come out a lot more pop like.
What are you looking forward to most about your upcoming European tour?
We just enjoy touring and have toured in Europe quite a lot, especially in Germany.
Deaf Havana are starting their 2019, EU and UK tour in Germany, stopping off in Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic, France, Denmark and the Netherlands before heading over to their first UK venue in Cardiff and then on to The Welly in Hull on 20th March.
Who were the main influencers of your music?
On a whole, we listen to a wide variety of music. Growing up we were influenced by the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Americano. However lyrically, I can’t really pinpoint any current or past band that we sound like. Lead singer James, confesses his personal favourites are Michael Jackson and Nirvana.
What can people expect from this tour? Will your performances vary from each location?
I expect this tour to have more of a fun aspect to it than previous tours due to the music from the new album, Rituals being more of a pop like genre to the previous more rock like music we have produced. However, we will integrate some of our older songs for our fans.
Can you tell us a bit about the video to your new single “Holy”?
The video for Holy, is a compilation of footage filmed by our friend John who is a great videographer. The inspiration came from some footage he shot from a show we played at Brixton academy in December. We really liked the footage he had taken and decided to use that and other bits he had shot from locations from our 2018 European tour. It’s like a compilation of our best bits.
Deaf Havana’s new album Rituals is available to buy from all major stockists online and instore. 24 Seven would definitely recommend picking up an album or ticket for the tour as Deaf Havana are not to be missed.
